Ron Bolt

Ron Bolt was born in Toronto, Canada in 1938. He trained at Northern Secondary School, graduating as gold medallist, with further studies at the Ontario College of Art. He holds an Associateship Diploma at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

Bolt's career as a painter spans over 40 years. He began as an abstract painter but the work always had a sense of landscape about it. As he travelled and worked his imagery evolved into a form of photographic realism. He uses the camera as a sketching tool collecting bits of information regarding the intricacy and subtlety of the natural world which he then composes into highly detailed paintings. For Bolt, it is the coastal and river waterways that fascinate him – a wilderness that he describes as “sacred”. He sees the wild places as a living record, a perceptible memory of our cultural heritage.

Like many of us, he observes the degradation and destruction of the environment with growing alarm. ‘We are quite possibly living in the twilight of the natural world as we have known it. In that regard, my work is an act of preservation. To preserve the natural world is to preserve a language of the wind and shifting light, of stillness, silence and space.

He has had over 80 one man exhibitions in public and commercial galleries .His paintings, prints and limited edition fine art books are in the collections of many public galleries and corporations, including the National Library of Canada, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Bolt states that his attitude to his life and art can best be expressed through the world of one of his idols, the legendary Canadian pianist and Bach specialist, Glenn Gould, "art is the lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity".
